I know I’m about eight years out of date with this question, but I just saw the film again the other night and remembered how much the ending confused me.
Does anyone have any ideas or have there ever been any definitive answer as to what happened?
Planet of the Apes (remake)

As far as I know it was done to confuse and maybe set up a sequel. It seems that so far we have been spared that fate...let's just hope that continues

I've got the book at home somewhere, so will double check if this is true, but I was under the impression that's how Monkey Planet by Pierre Boulle ends...
There's a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes in development hell - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/ - whether that will have anything to do with the continuity of the Burton film is anyone's guess..

Re: Planet of the Apes (remake)
How bizarre. Surely they would want to at least try and capitalise on the Tim Burton remake and set it after that, even if they recast Mark Walberg.alexfitch wrote: There's a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes in development hell - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/ - whether that will have anything to do with the continuity of the Burton film is anyone's guess..
