What are you reading? Should the world know about it?

Query about a book I read years ago...

Post by Moss Piglet » Tue Dec 12, 2006 4:59 pm

I wonder if anyone has read the following and can tell me the title. It's on the tip of my tongue but I just can't remember...

At Uni I took a sci-fi literature class and one of the books we studied was set in a post-apocalyptic time and one of the plot lines (spoiler ahead) involved the rediscovery of gun powder (I think). The main thing you'd remember about this book is the way it was written. It is in a kind of pigeon English and in order to understand the language I had to read the first few pages out loud to get the hang of it. It was written in such a way that you could experience how the English language might evolve decades/centuries (?) after an apocalypse. Although this would also make the book inaccessible to a lot of people.

So if anyone knows this book please let me know. Thanks.

I am not a quiet person.

My dad has an incredible memory for obscure Sci fi books, I'll ask him.

-any idea how old the book was? 1930's (Brave new world style), 1970's?
-did it feel like it was written by a sci-fi author, or a general literary author playing with apocalyptic futures (Handmaids' Tale style)?
- were you reading this in England, or somewhere else?

Is it DHALGREN by Sam Delaney? I never finished it (if I am honest) but that was a tough book to start because of the language.
